Australia's COVID-19 heroes recognised

A special honour roll has been created for the Australia Day honours recipients, paying tribute to those whose work is specifically connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 59 recipients include civilians, military personnel and people in the emergency services.

One of the most prominent is Dr Alan Finkel, who was named a Companion in the General Division (AC).

The former chief scientist of Australia, Dr Finkel headed the government's ventilator taskforce and chaired the Rapid Research Information Forum in the wake of the pandemic.

Dr Finkel has also been a tireless advocate for the advancement in technology to combat climate change.

Vaccine research Professor Helen Marshall was awarded an AM for her work, including her time as a member of the COVID-19 expert database.

She is also the South Australian recipient of Australian of the Year.

Royal Melbourne Hospitals head of cardiology Leeanne Grigg was also honoured with an AM.

Others included on the COVID-19 Honour Roll include winners of the Australian Police Medal, Australian Fire Service Medal, Ambulance Service Medal, Emergency Services Medal and Australian Corrections Medal.

Military personnel on the roll were honoured with the Member (AM) in the Military Division, the Conspicuous Service Cross and the Conspicuous Service Medal.
