Australian Navy busts major heroin operation
The Australian Navy has helped seize nearly a tonne of heroin worth $275 million in the Western Indian Ocean.
HMAS Warramunga intercepted a boat carrying 915 kilograms of the drugs on Wednesday after the vessel was spotted by a Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft.
The New Zealand plane had tracked the boat, which was believed to be bound for Africa, and stayed in the area while Warramunga's crew inspected it.
The drugs were found stashed in the hold.
The Warramunga has seized and intercepted six vessels carrying drugs since November, according to Rear Admiral Jaimie Hatcher.
"This operation highlights the important role played by partner nations, as part of the Combined Maritime Forces, in increasing maritime security in the Middle East and Western Indian Ocean," he said.
The drugs will be disposed of at sea, according the the Australian Defence Force.
