Aust keep Sochi terror risk under review

Australian authorities don't believe there is any increased threat to athletes attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi but say Russia is keeping the security situation under close watch.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Tony Negus says the Sydney 2000 Olympics - conducted even before the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the US - had required a major security presence, and Sochi will be no different.

"There has been some speculation around threats to Sochi in recent times," he told reporters attending an Interpol security convention in Sydney on Tuesday.

"Those have been very general in nature but we don't perceive any increased threat to Australian athletes who are travelling there."

Mr Negus said Australia was working with Russian authorities and Interpol ahead of the games, which begin on February 7.

"At this stage there is no specific threat which we are concerned about," he said.

Attorney General George Brandis said the games were obviously an occasion for heightened concern and attention.

That follows terrorist attacks in the city of Volgograd in late December which killed 30 people.

On January 19, terror group Vilayat Dagestan claimed responsibility for those attacks and threatened further attacks at the Sochi games.
