Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull insists his government is taking seriously the safety of women refugees on Nauru.

Two female refugees have claimed they were raped on the Pacific island, leaving one of them pregnant.

Australia was working with the Nauru government to ensure all asylum seekers and refugees were safe, Mr Turnbull told ABC radio on Thursday, pointing to a federal police mentoring program and a new gender violence and child protection unit.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton later told reporters on the Gold Coast the Australian Federal Police was involved in investigating the rape cases.

He said the women would receive counselling through medical service provider IHMS and other support.
