Aust and PNG officials discuss Manus riot

The outbreak of fatal violence on Manus Island was high on the agenda of overnight talks between Australian and Papua New Guinean senior officials.

Riots at the island's detention centre on Monday night left an Iranian man dead and more than 80 others injured, some seriously, and authorities have remained on standby for further trouble.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan, on an official visit to Port Moresby, was expected to meet PNG Attorney-General Kerenga Kua on Tuesday night.

"I'm sure these matters will be discussed," Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said of the Manus Island disturbance.

PNG police are investigating the violence, during which their officers fired shots on at least two occasions.

One asylum seeker was shot in the buttocks during the fracas.

Mr Morrison said more information about the incident, including the man's death, would stem from the PNG police investigation and coroner's report.
