Australia's ambassador to China has reportedly been called in to explain the Turnbull government's new foreign interference laws.

In a further sign of an emerging diplomatic row, Jan Adams was officially summoned by Chinese officials on Friday, The Australian said.

It follows the announcement of proposed laws to bolster Australia's espionage laws and the resignation of Labor senator Sam Dastyari over his relationship with a Chinese donor.
