A former senior military commander warns the latest contingent of Australian soldiers being deployed to the Middle East are most at risk from rogue Iraqi troops.

But the extra 330 troops on the training mission will be safer than if they were in combat, says retired major-general Jim Molan who was chief of operations of the US-led multinational force in Iraq in 2004.

He told Sky News on Wednesday that indirect fire into the Australian base north of Baghdad and the risk of Iraqi soldiers turning rogue were the biggest dangers.
