An Australian woman taking part in an SBS documentary has been shot at by Islamic State militants after filmmakers took her within 800m of the terrorist group in Syria.

Kim Vuga, a participant in the latest series of the broadcaster's popular Go Back To Where You Came From, says she considered joining Kurdish fighters in the war against IS after her experience in the devastated country, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Footage showing the first look of the three-part series that airs later this month shows Vuga and other participants diving for cover as she's walked through the ravaged area.

"At one stage we were 800m from the front line and definitely getting shot at," Vuga told the newspaper.

"Probably the worst part was going as close as we could and knowing that their bullets could reach us. We were told to listen for any whistling sounds coming through the air and that would mean a mortar had been fired. We were told we had 30 seconds to run 100 metres."

Vuga said the only reason she resisted joining Kurdish fighters was her family back home.
