Ebay to celebrate its 18th with biggest ever sale

Ebay is preparing a special celebration to mark its 18th birthday.

The site, which launched in 1999, announced on A Current Affair that the occasion would mark its biggest sale ever.

"It'll be like having a sale on the whole of Australian retail," site director Tim Mackinnon said.

From 6pm to 10pm tomorrow, shoppers will receive 18 percent off site-wide.

Some of the biggest savings are in the tech department - including more than $300 off the new iPhone.

Customers can also save $343 on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

eBay will also launch an "image search" feature - meaning customers can use pictures instead of words to search the site's global catalogue of $1.1 billion items.

There are 40,000 Aussie stores on eBay, and 90 percent of the 60 million items they offer are brand new.

Nearly 3000 Australians have become millionaires through the website - among them Edisons owner David Mills.

Mr Mills's company is worth about $100 million.

"It started with just an idea basically," he said.

"I wanted to buy a pole chainsaw, it was expensive - $1000 - and I thought, why not sell some myself?"

He imported a shipment of the tools and sold them online – and now has a warehouse full of goods and a booming business.

“This is beyond any imagination we had at the time,” he said.
