Aussie Invictus athlete on drugs charges

An Australian Invictus Games athlete is facing a raft of drugs and weapons charges after being arrested by Queensland police.

Tyronne Gawthorne was arrested and charged by Cairns police in September after they allegedly found him with drugs including cocaine.

He is competing in powerlifting and swimming events at the games for wounded and ill defence veterans in Sydney.

Gawthorne posed for a photo with Invictus Games founder, Prince Harry, last year after meeting at a training session. The royal was in Sydney last June to mark the countdown to the games.

The charges against Gawthorne include possessing dangerous drugs including cocaine and testosterone, possessing three kinds of restricted drugs, and failing to safely secure a weapon in a vehicle.

The 36-year-old is due to face Cairns Magistrates Court on December 5.

Comment is being sought from Invictus Games officials.
