The ski fields of Aspen are embracing the Australia Day spirit, serving up Australian culinary icons from Vegemite to lamingtons and raising the Aussie flag at almost 4000 metres.

The Colorado town, renowned as a destination for the rich and famous, has taken on a bit of an Australian feel with the Aspen Snowmass resort offering free Vegemite on toast to skiers and snowboarders as they hit the slopes.

The celebrations began a few days ago with a lamington competition hosted by Australian celebrity chef Neil Perry, an ambassador for the resort, on the rooftop of the Little Nell hotel.

An Australian flag was also set to fly atop the Highlands Bowl, at 3774m, and in an area of the ski field only accessible by hiking.

More than two feet of snow has fallen at Aspen Snowmass in the past two weeks.
