Aussie Ben Mendelsohn wins Outstanding Supporting Actor Emmy

Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn has won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a drama at the Emmy Awards for his role in Bloodline.

The Melbourne-born Mendelsohn, 47, has become a regular nominee on the TV show awards circuit over the past two years thanks to his portrayal of the twisted, revenge-filled Danny Rayburn on the Florida Keys-set Netflix series.

He was the only one of this year's nominees in the category not at the Los Angeles ceremony. 

"I'll have it at for home when you get back, Ben," presenter and Empire actress Taraji P. Henson said.

Mendelsohn went home empty-handed from last year's Emmys and January's Golden Globes and bookmakers, TV critics and awards analysts had largely expected him to fleeced again by one of two Game of Thrones nominees - Peter Dinklage and Kit Harington - in the best supporting actor in a drama category.

"Honestly, if it's not Dinklage, it will be Harington," the Washington Post's Emily Yahr predicted.

"This is a 'GoT' category."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus made Emmy history earlier in the ceremony when she won her fifth straight lead comedy actress award for Veep while Sarah Paulson, Courtney B Vance and Sterling K Brown won for their performances in the mini-series The People v OJ Simpson.

Game of Thrones capped a historic night by winning the Emmy for best drama series on Sunday.

The HBO hit show- now the most decorated narrative series in history with 38 Emmys over the years - saw off Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards, Mr Robot and The Americans for the evening's biggest prize.

The all-time Emmy list of winners - which includes nonfiction - is topped by NBC comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live with 45 awards.
