Australians in southern states could have a chance to catch more spectacular light displays this week after Aurora Australis blazed across the sky last night.

A major aurora display cascaded along the night sky for parts of Australia in May.

Last night's was smaller in scope - but more may be on the way.

"Several coronal mass ejections may impact Earth within the next 24 hours," the Bureau updated on its website about 1am today.

If this CME activity sparks geomagnetic storms in the atmosphere, it could trigger more nightly displays.

"If geomagnetic activity does eventuate, aurora may be visible during local nighttime hours in Tasmania and southern Victoria on July 31," the Bureau said.
