Fears subside over attempted abduction

Police are no longer looking for two people who were accused of trying to abduct a girl from a petrol station north of Mackay.

Pictures of the woman and young man were broadcast across Australia after a seven-year-old girl told police she was grabbed by the woman at the BP service station at Coningsby on Sunday afternoon.

The girl said she was pulled from the toilets and out the doors of the petrol station, before managing to struggle free and run to her family.

The woman then walked over to a light blue sedan, driven the man, and they drove off.

Police interviewed the woman and man on Monday, and Mackay District Superintendent Terry Borland says there is now no need for alarm.

"Concerns at this time are such that we don't hold any great concerns at this time in relation to this incident," he said.

"There is a lot of movement around at the moment, it is school holidays, it is the end of a long weekend and we should be always aware of where our children are at any given time and what they are doing.

"At this time the full extent of the inquiries aren't known, but I can say concerns have been removed in terms of this incident."

A police media spokesman told AAP there can be misunderstood situations a lot of the time.

"We are now looking at the veracity of the complaint," he told AAP.
