ATM skimming gang hits Sydney

A gang with links to Eastern Europe is behind a spike in ATM skimming across Sydney, police say.

They say more than 40 ATMs in suburbs including Mosman, Double Bay, Dural and Parramatta have been targeted since January.

Two foreign nationals - a Hungarian and a Romanian - were arrested last month after allegedly tampering with an ATM in the Sydney CBD.

But the Fraud and Cybercrime Squad believes others are still out there, fitting skimming devices to vulnerable ATMs.

It has released security camera pictures of two men wanted for questioning, both of Eastern European appearance and aged in their 20s or 30s.

"The skimming devices the group are using are capable of copying card details while a tiny video camera records people entering their personal identification numbers," Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis said.

"A copy of the compromised card is then created, with all of the capabilities of the original, allowing the group to access the account holders' funds at liberty."
