Man charged after violent 40-person brawl erupts in Sydney CBD

One man has been charged after a brawl involving 40 people erupted in Sydney's CBD in the early hours of this morning.

Authorities were alerted to the fight outside a Pitt Street convenience store about 4am, and police used pepper spray to break up the fight.

The fight had spilled on to the road by the time police arrived.

A 19-year-old woman suffered head injuries after she was slammed to the ground in the scuffle.

Police said an earlier fight inside a nearby hotel, where a 19-year-old man was knocked unconscious, caused the intoxicated group to spill out onto the street.

Two men, aged 18 and 29, and a woman, aged 19, were arrested at the scene.

Witnesses said the initial fight started when a girl was groped by a man, sparking a heated exchange inside the hotel.

The 29-year-old South Hurstville man has been charged with affray and resisting arrest, and was granted bail to appear in court on May 5.

He ran from reporters after he was granted bail today.

The woman and younger man were released pending further investigations.

The investigation is continuing and more charges are expected to be laid once CCTV is reviewed.
