Reshuffle expected as Assistant Treasurer Sinodinos resigns

Assistant Treasurer Arthur Sinodinos has resigned from the ministry.

The decision is expected to trigger a ministerial reshuffle.

The decision paves the way for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to reshuffle his frontbench as early as this weekend.

"I will be resigning as assistant treasurer with effect from close of business today," Senator Sinodinos said in a statement on Friday.

He had stood aside from the role to give evidence in NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiries.

"I am confident that when the reports are finally released, I will not be subject to any finding of corrupt conduct or illegality," he said.

Senator Sinodinos informed Prime Minister Tony Abbott this week that the ICAC proceedings involving Senator Sinodinos have been delayed until March or beyond.

They'd both agreed it was necessary that an assistant treasurer be available to assist with next year's budget.

"The prime minister has advised me that I cannot resume ministerial duties until the ICAC matters are completed and reported upon," he said.

But he had all intention of returning to the Abbott ministry "in the not too distant future".

Mr Abbott said he would name a replacement for Senator Sinodinos in the next few days because the government needed an assistant treasurer for the preparation of the budget.

He also paid tribute to the senator, saying he had provided sterling service to the government and the parliament.
