Canteen fire at Melbourne primary school deemed 'suspicious'

Police are investigating after a canteen caught fire inside a primary school in Melbourne's inner-city suburbs last night.

Emergency services responded to the fire, which was quickly contained to one room in the school on Langs Road in Ascot Vale about 8pm.

The fire is being treated as "suspicious", according to police.

Fire crews arrived on scene within six minutes and were able to contain the fire to the canteen.

"Upon arrival, crews found the school canteen - a brick building that was 10 by 10 metres in size - was on fire," a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and ventilated the property, before handing the scene to Victoria Police.

A crime scene was quickly established.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established and investigations would continue.
