A registered sex offender has allegedly been caught with child pornography during a police crackdown on child sex criminals on the NSW mid-north coast.

The 57-year-old was arrested after a raid in the Newcastle area on Wednesday and is facing charges of child abuse material possession and production.

His arrest came during a police and NSW corrective services crackdown on child-sex offenders in the area in the lead-up to the school holidays.

Teams of 30 officers made the raids on Wednesday with a focus on checking the computers of people convicted of child abuse material offences.

Authorities detected 18 breaches of child sex offender reporting laws.

One alleged breach led to the arrest of a 22-year-old man.

It is the first time police have worked with another agency to check on the compliance of registered child sex offenders.
