Man charged after police officer 'hit by car'

A man has been charged over the alleged hit-and-run of a police officer in Sydney’s west.

The senior constable was operating a radar gun when he clocked a Mazda 3 going at 121km/h in a 70km/h zone on Roberts Road in Greenacre last month, police allege.

Police said the officer signalled for the speeding driver to pull over, but the car instead allegedly sped up to overtake a taxi and struck the constable, sending him over its bonnet and roof.

The officer was taken to Concord Hospital and suffered hand and leg injuries.

Detective Inspective Katie Orr said the officer was lucky to survive the crash.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at a home in Greystanes today and charged with an array of offences including negligent driving, failing to stop and assist after impact and not obeying police direction.

He was refused bail and will face court tomorrow.
