Army paratrooper rushed to hospital after SCG mishap

An army paratrooper has been carried off the Sydney Cricket Ground after crashing heavily after losing control of his chute during a pre-match aerial display.

About six parachutists floated to the spongy grass of the sporting ground half an hour before the first bounce of the Anzac weekend match between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

While five of the aerial artists made a safe landing, amateur footage of the moment shows one appear to lose control just metres from the ground.

Amid a backdrop of a grey Sydney sky, a growing crowd could be heard collectively shrieking with fright as the paratrooper makes a sharp turn moments from landing.

“Big landing,” the ground announcer awkwardly jokes as the parachutist hits the dirt.

The heavy silence that has taken over the crowd is only broken by someone sitting close to the cameraman suggesting something is wrong.

“Oh he’s hurt,” the man can be heard saying.

Fairfax Media reports the paratrooper was lifted onto a medicab and rushed off the ground after about 15 minutes of medical attention.

The ABC quotes the Sydney Swans' club doctor as saying that he believed the parachutist would be okay, and that he had regained consciousness on the way to the ambulance.
