Son of former Police Commissioner at centre of 17-hour Gold Coast siege

A dramatic siege on the Gold Coast has ended peacefully after a man armed with two knives forced streets into lockdown yesterday.

Paul Atkinson was taken into police custody after being holed-up in a house in Parkwood for 17 hours, threatening self-harm.

Officers were first called to Greenacre Drive around 3.30pm with reports of a man making threats.

Mr Atkinson then ran into the home, allegedly arming himself with knives, forcing police to declare an emergent situation around 5pm.

Police then closed off the street and asked neighbours to remain in their homes.

Heavily armed officers stormed the home just after 9am today when negotiations with the father of two began to deteriorate.

Mr Atkinson, the son of former Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson, was alone in the house.

It is believed officers have been called to Mr Atkinson's home numerous times over the past two weeks.

One police officer is believed to have been injured in the siege and was taken from the scene with a bandaged arm.

Mr Atkinson is now recovering in Gold Coast University Hospital and is expected to undergo a psychiatric report.

No charges have yet been laid.
