Surfers Paradise Meter Maids are typically renowned for their beauty, but soon they may be also known for their brawn.

After strutting their stuff along the glitter strip for 52 years, management of the iconic service has opened its doors to the opposite sex, taking applications for Meter Men.

Mike Rapinett is a personal trainer and was first in line for the new gig. He says he's very comfortable not wearing a shirt.

"It would be really good to be paid for it – why not?” he told 9NEWS.

"I do it anyway, and I can tan at the same time, so it's a win-win in every single way.”

While Mike hasn't yet received his official uniform of gold budgie smugglers, it wouldn’t be the first time a man has donned the golden spandex.

Ten years ago, former AFL star Warwick Capper hit the streets on behalf of Meter Maids – a novelty that was to wear off soon after.

Felicia Aden, a current employee, hopes the perks of the job are enough to attract and keep some local talent.

"You get to be this close to the beach, get a tan, talk to people all day,” she said.

"It's a very easy job but it's fun and exciting.”
