Man drowns despite efforts of surfers at Victorian beach

A man has drowned at a beach in Victoria despite the work of passers-by who pulled him from the water.

Authorities said the man, aged in his 30s, was pulled from the surf at Marengo Beach, near Apollo Bay, about 2.10pm today.

Despite the efforts of surfers who tried to revive the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.
