Senior Labor MP Anthony Albanese has split from his partner of more than 30 years, former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt.

The frontbencher has revealed the separation from his wife in a statement on Monday, saying he is "deeply saddened".

"We will continue to share parenting responsibilities of our 18-year-old son Nathan, who has successfully completed his HSC and has developed into an outstanding young man who we are both proud of," Mr Albanese said.

The MP said no third parties have been involved in the split.

Ms Tebbutt was a NSW Labor MP for 17 years before departing state politics in 2015.

She is currently chief executive of the NSW Mental Health Coordinating Council.

She was deputy premier between 2008 and 2011 - the first woman to hold the position - under leaders Nathan Rees and Kristina Keneally.
