Protesters clashed with police outside a Liberal Party fundraiser in Melbourne where Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and John Howard were due to speak last night.
About 150 people gathered outside the Central Pier function venue at Docklands about 6pm to protest the federal government's changes to higher education and the treatment of asylum seekers.

Some of the building's windows were broken as demonstrators clashed with police, with officers using pepper spray on about 10 people, including an ABC cameraman.
The fundraising dinner was organised to mark the 20th anniversary of the election of John Howard's government.
