Daniel Andrews plans to give cricket new Victorian home if elected

New first-class cricket facilities in inner Melbourne would attract more international matches to the state and clear the way for more blockbuster AFL games at the MCG, the opposition says.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has pledged $25 million to upgrade the facilities at St Kilda's Junction Oval.

He said the upgrade would include refurbishments to grandstands as well as gender-specific change rooms and high-performance training areas.

"It's what's needed for the game, it's what's needed for all the jobs, the visitor economy, the tourism benefits that come from more international games being played here," Mr Andrews said.

The facilities would be completed by the 2016/17 summer season, which would open up opportunities for major events such as an ICC World Twenty20.

Mr Andrews said AFL games could be back at the MCG from round one.

"So we don't ever again have this situation where you almost feel like the AFL season is half over before you get a blockbuster game at the G," he said.

He was joined at Junction oval by Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria chief executives James Sutherland and Tony Dodemaide, who both welcomed the announcement, as well as captains of Australia's Twenty20 teams Aaron Finch and Meg Lanning.

Mr Dodemaide said the redevelopment would cost about $40 million, with Cricket Victoria giving $10 million, and he was confident they would be able to meet the budget.

Labor said the ground's capacity would be 7000.

Australia's Twenty20 loss to South Africa yesterday was watched by 21,415.
