Karen Andrews 'considering options' amid Liberal Party leadership speculation

Outgoing Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews has responded to speculation about who will be the next leader of the Liberal Party.

Andrews, who retained her seat of McPherson on the Gold Coast, has been named by Liberal sources as one of the contenders for the top job, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I am interested in what role would allow me to add the most value to my party and the members of my party as well, so I am going to consider my position over the next day or so," Andrews told radio host Neil Breen on 4BC this morning.

Outgoing Defence Minister Peter Dutton is considered to be the most likely frontrunner for the Liberal leadership and have the support of the party, while outgoing Trade Minister Dan Tehan has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.

Andrews told Breen she would also be considering the role of deputy leader as a possibility.

No date had been set on when members of the party room would next meet to discuss the leadership, she said.

Andrews said it was clear the success of the teal independents in this election showed the Liberals needed to do a better job of representing women.

"Women who were professional, well educated, chose not to not to vote for us as they had before," Andrews said.

"Now, we've got a lot of work to do, to make sure that we're properly representing the views of women..I think what we have seen is that women actually stood up and said, 'we count'."
