ALP national executive to hear Setka case

A Labor frontbencher has formally laid charges under branch rules against union boss John Setka in the next step of the party's bid to expel him.

Labor's national executive has received the charges from Mark Dreyfus that Mr Setka's behaviour is in breach of the Victorian ALP's code of conduct for members.

It has now invited Mr Setka to respond.

The national executive will also hear arguments from both sides in Sydney on October 25 before ruling on whether to boot him from the party.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has previously said the construction boss had brought the Labor Party into disrepute over a long period of time, including through allegations of domestic violence levelled against him.

Mr Setka launched legal action against his expulsion, but Victoria's Supreme Court ruled in August the party was within its rights to pursue the action.
