ALP crashes in Victoria ahead of election

Labor's stronghold grip in leader Bill Shorten's home state of Victoria has crumbled in the past three months ahead of an election year.

An analysis of Newspolls commissioned by The Australian newspaper between October and December indicate Victoria has nosedived from being the opposition's strongest state when Tony Abbott was in power to its weakest now that Malcolm Turnbull is at the helm.

Mr Shorten's satisfaction rating in his home state has plunged 14 points compared to the same period last year, with the analysis suggesting the Labor-held marginal seats of McEwen and Bendigo will be at serious risk come polling day.

Satisfaction in the opposition leader has slumped to a record low in South Australia while in Victoria it is the lowest for any federal opposition leader in 12 years.

Labor's primary vote has dived eight points to a four-year low of 33 per cent in Victoria and languishes well below 40 per cent in every state.

In contrast, support for the Coalition has surged across the country.

Liberal Leader Malcolm Turnbull is ranked as preferred prime minister by a margin of at least 43 points in all states, with at least 60 per cent of voters in all regions backing him for the top job.
