A man may face drink driving charges after crashing his boat into a sea wall in Melbourne's Hobsons Bay, trapping himself and his passenger below deck.

The 43-year-old skipper and another man were trapped under the boat when it capsized last night.

The six-metre fishing boat was headed for the Williamstown boat ramp in Newport when it struck the wall.

Eventually, the pair managed to free themselves from the boat, climb onto the rock wall and walk to the boat ramp in Newport.

Water police then subjected the boat's captain to a breath test. He was allegedly found to be over the legal blood alcohol limit.

The driver is yet to be charged.
