‘So sorry’: Grandmother pleads with police pursuit suspect to hand himself in after toddler’s death

The grandmother of a woman believed to be a passenger in the stolen black Audi involved in a police chase that killed a toddler in Sydney's west has pleaded with the car’s driver to come forward.

Golda Tuite, 81, said her sympathies were with the grieveing Tauaifaga family who are now mourning the loss of 17-month-old Tateolena.

"I feel so sorry for (the mother), grieving for that little baby," she said.

Her granddaughter Katie Tuite is believed to have been a passenger in a car police suspect was driven by 22-year-old Christopher Chandler, who is on the run.

Mrs Tuite said her granddaughter, arrested on drugs charges yesterday, had called her from Silverwater Jail to apologise for her arrest.

She said now it was up to Chandler, wanted over the car’s theft, to turn himself over to police.

"I would like to ask him to please hand himself in," she said.

The comments posted by Chandler on social media paint a picture of a troubled young man who believes he has little to lose.

"Who (and) wat (sic) do i have (and) the truth is no one (and) nothing," Christopher Chandler wrote on social media last month.

"At least were (sic) only here so long."

Chandler's erratic lifestyle and clashes with the law reached a boiling point this week when he allegedly led police on a wild pursuit in Sydney's west that left a 17-month-old child dead.

The 22-year-old was allegedly behind the wheel of the charcoal-coloured Audi that smashed through a fence in a Constitution Hill street on Thursday night.

Tateolena Tauaifaga was playing on the other side of the fence and sustained fatal injuries.

It is unclear whether the police car or Chandler's stolen car hit Tateolena, a twin and one of eight children in the family.

The Audi was later found in Darlinghurst, where a woman alleged to have been Chandler's passenger was arrested.

Chandler still hasn't been found.

A neighbour and family friend, who spoke on the basis of anonymity, said Chandler and his younger brother, Corey, grew up in a house on the opposite side of Richill Park, near Callan Way.

It is visible from Tateolena's family home, now the location for a steadily growing shrine of tributes, flowers and candles.

The neighbour, whose son was friends with Chandler, said Chandler suffered a major blow when his mother, Lisa, died almost six years ago.

"Him and his brother, they didn't have anyone else," he told AAP.

"His father didn't want them, he was in jail.

"They lived with their grandmother for a while in Redfern. They were basically homeless."

The man, who has lived in the community for almost two decades, said he took Chandler in at one point but eventually had enough.

After a reporter showed the man the police mug shot of a gaunt-looking Chandler, he began to cry.

"If maybe he had someone to support him..." he said.

Another young woman said she grew up in the community with Chandler.

"We all grew up together and we don't judge people," she said.

Police are looking for Chandler, who allegedly stole the Audi from Kingsford on Wednesday, but have urged the public not to approach him.
