Alleged HIV infector stays behind bars

A Sydney man accused of knowingly infecting a woman with HIV could have his charge revised, a court has heard.

Court papers show Christopher Muronzi is charged with maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm against a female partner, who can't be named, between late 2003 and mid-2005.

The Neutral Bay man did not appear before Waverley Local Court on Wednesday as prosecutors told the magistrate his charge "is most likely going to be changed to a strictly indictable offence", meaning it must be dealt with in a higher court.

Lawyers for the 44-year-old made no application for his release, meaning he will remain behind bars until he next appears via video link before Central Local Court in August.
