La La Land dominates Golden Globes

La La Land will go to the Oscars next month as the film to beat, after emerging as the major winner of the 74th Annual Golden Globes.

The romantic musical comedy-drama was named Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, as well as collecting multiple nods for the stars and those behind the scenes.

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, respectively. Damien Chazelle collected the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards, while the musical also won Best Original Score and Best Original Song for 'City of Stars'.

Nine Network Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins earlier earmarked La La Land for Golden Globe success.

While Wilkins confided he’d “love” to see Mel Gibson win Best Director for his film Hacksaw Ridge, he correctly predicted La La Land director Damien Chazelle would net the Globe.

Although Wilkins incorrectly tipped Manchester by the Sea for Best Motion Picture, Drama, he did say surprise winner Moonlight would be its strongest competition.

For Best Supporting Actress, Wilkins was holding out for Aussie Nicole Kidman for her role in Lion, however the gong went to Viola Davis for Fences.

Wilkins noted the results of tonight’s ceremony will likely be reflected in the Oscar nominations to be announced later this month.

Veteran actress Meryl Streep was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures and used her speech to call out US President-elect Donald Trump and his "instinct to humiliate" while noting the diversity of the stars in the room.
