Nine Queenslanders among MH17 dead

Nine Queenslanders are believed to be among 27 Australians killed in the Ukraine plane disaster.

Premier Campbell Newman says it's a dark day for the state.

"It's believed nine of the people on board were our fellow Queenslanders," Mr Newman told reporters.

But he warned that number could go higher, with the nationalities of all 300-odd victims on the downed Malaysia Airlines plane not yet known.

"Like all Queenslanders, I was shocked, outraged, dismayed and deeply saddened," Mr Newman said, adding the tragedy "appears to be a crime".

He could not provide details about the Queensland victims.

"Today, as far as I'm concerned, is about families, friends and communities of Queensland that are affected," he said.

Mr Newman said he supported the Australian government's push for a full, independent inquiry into what had occurred and who was responsible.

He said the loss of so many innocent lives was chilling and sickening.

"It's hard not to get angry and emotional about it," Mr Newman said.

He said today was a day for grieving and supporting those who'd lost so much.

Several Western Australian victims, including children, have also been identified but numbers remain unknown.

Premier Mike Baird has tweeted that one person from NSW was also on board.

Northern Territory deputy chief minister David Tollner has said he is awaiting confirmation that "at least" on Territorian was on the flight.

Three Victorian families have also been contacted by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
