Alec Baldwin arrested riding bike

Alec Baldwin has been arrested on a public street in New York over riding his bike the wrong way.

The 56-year-old actor was stopped by two NYPD officers for cycling against traffic on Fifth Avenue in lower Manhattan around 10.30am local time.

The 30 Rock star reportedly did not have identification on him and was arrested after becoming belligerent with the officers.

Photos posted on Twitter by In Touch Weekly show Baldwin in handcuffs being led into the back of a police car by a female officer.

He can be seen wearing shorts, a jacket and a visor.

One witness told the publication Baldwin "went ballistic on the cops, screaming at them" during the incident.

By the time he was cuffed he was "calm and quiet", another onlooker said.

Baldwin was later released from custody after being issued with a court summons for his cycling infraction and for disorderly conduct.

He then went on a Twitter rant about the incident.

"New York City is a mismanaged carnival of stupidity that is desperate for revenue and anxious to criminalise behavior once again," he tweeted.

Baldwin is scheduled to appear in court on July 24.
