Aldi's bold new move to crack down on shoplifting

Shoppers at one inner-city Sydney Aldi have noticed a major change at the check-out, with giant monitors quietly rolled out above self-serve facilities.

The screens, roughly the size of a desktop computer, are fitted above all the self-serve checkouts at Darlinghurst Aldi, located within the Oxford Village complex.

Scanning shoppers in high-definition as they bag their items, the screens read "monitoring in progress" as they detect potential theft.

It's unclear how many branches the screens have been installed at across the nation's almost 600 Aldi stores.

"ALDI have CCTV in place across all our stores as a security measure to ensure the safety of our customers and employees and also to monitor for theft," a spokeswoman for the supermarket told 9news.com.au.

"We are trialling a variety of new CCTV technologies across a select number of stores which are in line with all relevant surveillance laws."

The move follows fellow supermarket heavyweight Woolworths, who rolled out their own - albeit significantly smaller - camera scanning facilities earlier this year.

Woolworths said the self-checkouts use camera vision and artificial intelligence to detect when items aren't scanned correctly.

If a product is not scanned, a short video is replayed for the customer on the self-checkout and the customer has an opportunity to rescan it.

It is understood Aldi's cameras do not currently use facial recognition or AI technology.
