Payment-dodging parents slipping through child support cracks

Human Services Minister Alan Tudge has vowed to "crack down harder" on parents avoiding child support.

Earlier today the government said a crackdown on parents traveling overseas while owing significant child support debts had netted $10 million in the past two years.

However, as A Current Affair revealed last night, many parents still have trouble dealing with child support.

Mr Tudge told host Tracy Grimshaw "no system is perfect".

"We've got a few tools up our sleeves," he said.

The government has the ability to quarantine tax returns and job earnings, as well as the no-fly crackdown.

"But of course some people still slip through the cracks," he said.

He said the "emotion-charged" nature of the conflicts that could exist between separated parents meant it could be difficult to reach a verdict.

There are 1.3 million parents with 1.2 million children caught up in the child support system.

Mr Tudge said they had been dedicating more resources to stopping parents who refused to pay child support, slip through the cracks.
