Airport security upgrades won't reach Aust

Australians might face new airport security measures overseas, but they will not see the latest anti-terrorism requirements at home.

Passengers on flights departing Europe, Africa and the Middle East and travelling directly to the United States and United Kingdom will be subject to an additional security check.

They must be able to show their phones and tablets are charged and can power on, so security staff can check they are not bombs in disguise.

The changes, put in place overseas this week, come amid reports terror networks are working on an explosive that could evade existing screening.

However, Australia will not impose additional security measures and the nation's terrorism alert level remains unchanged at medium, a spokesman for Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss told AAP.

"These measures may apply to passengers departing and transiting through affected airports, including Australian carriers - Qantas and Virgin Australia and their codeshare airlines," he said.

But despite reports the security upgrade was implemented on Tuesday, Qantas is yet to make changes.

"Qantas has not received any requests to implement any additional security measures," a airline spokeswoman said.
