Thousands of aged care workers walking off the job

Thousands of aged care workers across two states will today take unprecedented strike action, as anger over working conditions continues.

Workers from eight major aged care providers in Queensland and Western Australia will walk off the job at 11.30am for five hours.

South Australian workers were meant to take part, but the workplace tribunal blocked strike action in that state over concern for the welfare of aged care residents.

The United Workers' Union says care receivers will not be affected, but that workers are so frustrated and burnt out they need to take action.

Workers are calling for extra staffing levels in facilities across the country, and a wage increase.

They say they were told the royal commission into aged care would help with their problems, but that it isn't the case.

Rallies will be held in the Brisbane and Perth CBDs at 1pm.
