AFL, NRL fans told to go easy on meat pies

AFL and NRL fans are being urged not to go over board on meat pies during the grand finals amid predictions they'll scoff half a tonne of saturated fat.

An estimated 30,000 meat pies and 20,000 sausage rolls - along with tomato sauce and hot chips - will be served to footy fans at Melbourne's MCG and Sydney's ANZ Stadium this weekend, The Heart Foundation says.

"Grand Final Day is a special occasion so it's not the end of the world if you enjoy a pie or sausage roll during the game, but consider going without the hot chips, or packing some healthy snacks to take with you instead," the foundation's national manager Melanie Chisholm said.
