Ravi the red panda is back home safe and sound after sparking two days of high drama with a brazen escape from Adelaide Zoo.

The furry fugitive was found outside his enclosure early on Friday morning.

He hid out in a fig tree in Botanic Park and it took 48 hours to get him home.

Attempts to lure him with his favourite foods of bamboo and sweet corn went ignored as he snoozed in the tree.

A vet was brought in to shoot a dart at him but it took six tries before he was able to be tranquillised.

"(We) finally got a dart into him and then had to wait just about 15 minutes for the drug to take effect," zoo director Dr Phil Ainsley said.

He then dropped from his hideout in dramatic fashion but was safely caught in a sheet.

Zoo bosses said he would be checked over before going back to his enclosure.
