Great-great grandmother has lived through both of Adelaide’s hottest days

Adelaide is sweating through its hottest summer day on record, the last being in 1939. One local has toughed it out through both.

Today’s temperature officially hit 46.3C making it the hottest day on record for the South Australia city.

The last time the mercury hit close to that was on January 12, 1939.

“I remember that day, it was a couple of weeks before my wedding,” Jess Stapledon told 9news.com.au.

The soon to be 101-year-old lived in the beachside suburb of Semaphore and remembers being thankful she lived so close to the water.

“We didn’t have air-conditioning last time it was this hot,” she said.

“I’ve got it on full blast today.”

These days Ms Stapledon, a former dressmaker, lives at Tea Tree Gardens Retirement Village in Hope Valley, a bit further inland than her previous coastal home.

“There’s always something on in the village, every day. Garden activities, playing on my iPad, it’s never boring,” Ms Stapledon said.

The avid churchgoer has five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She said the entire family were finding ways to keep cool in the hot weather, but the sunshine was nice.

The temperature is still 44.6 degrees with numbers in the low 30s set to lead into the weekend.
