'Very stressed' parents at bedside of boy fighting for life after being hit by train

A boy who was hit by a train on the way to school in Adelaide is fighting for life with his family by his side.

Rhyle Abiado, 11, was struck by a train at Tambelin Railway Station in Evanston Gardens in the city's north yesterday morning.

Today his uncle Rudy Huan said Rhyle's parents were with him in hospital and are "very stressed".

"We are going to visit tonight to support my nephew," Huan said.

Rhyle's classmates and teachers at Trinity College saw the horrific accident.

Paramedics worked on Rhyle by the side of the railway line before he was taken to the Women's and Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

The school says it "continues to work closely with the family".

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis has refuted calls for automatic pedestrian gates at the station despite 17 being installed along the same line.

"I think it's important to understand that passive crossings are used across Australia, they're designed to an Australian standard and we don't have unlimited funding," Koutsantonis said.

Meanwhile another person was hit by a train in the city today.

An elderly woman was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with critical injuries after being hit by a city-bound service at East Grange in the city's west.

Passengers were held on board for 45 minutes.
