Adelaide's southern suburbs to welcome thousands of new homes

More than 3500 homes will be built in Adelaide's southern suburbs on the site of the old Port Stanvac oil refinery, not only offering buyers a tantalising piece of untouched coastline but providing enough new housing to finally drive prices down.

The 230-hectare site, which has been abandoned for 15 years, will be redeveloped by Melbourne-based developer MAB to bring 3600 new homes to the southern suburbs.

The project, which is expected to be completed by 2028, includes plans for 15 per cent of the new homes to be designated as affordable housing.

This move aims to address the ongoing housing affordability challenges faced by many South Australians.

"I do think it will certainly help with the under-supply that's happening at the moment," local real estate agent Glenn Nelson said.

The 2028 completion date is an ambitious timeline, and the Environment Protection Authority is working to determine the extent of contamination of the land, but the developer is confident it can be cleaned up.

"We've just cleaned up the Brompton gasworks site," MAB managing director Andrew Buxton said.

"This one is nowhere that sort of degree but we've got to start pulling out all the old pipes, we are going to find some contamination."
