Authorities are calling for better regulation of South Australia's petrol pricing with Adelaide seeing some of its biggest spikes this month.

The Royal Automobile Association says the state's petrol prices are fluctuating from 20-year lows to hip pocket-punishing highs and they need to be regulated.

"Even though we've got lower fuel prices, the spikes we are getting are still higher than we got 12 months ago – We are getting 34 cent spikes," RAA's Mark Borlace told 9News.

The RAA says a lack of real time fuel pricing is to blame for the inconsistency, allowing retailers to avoid facing up to competition.

"It's about the market playing with consumers by spiking the petrol to get a movement in the market that will affect their business," Mr Borlace said.

"We want the government to get on with it and get the legislation in place."

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall is backing the calls for the legislation to come through, saying he wants it in parliament already.

"I was hoping it would go through in the last sitting week – I think it's one of our highest items of business this week," Mr Marshall said.

The RAA hopes new legislation will be underway by September but for now, recommend waiting until prices drop again before filling up your tank.

"If you can, fill up at anything around $1 and try and make the tank last a fortnight when it is cheap again," Mr Borlace said.
