An Adelaide man accused of killing his elderly neighbour with a hammer last year has pleaded not guilty to his murder.

Steven Patrick Berg was charged with the murder of 74-year-old Deon Hewitt in May after the older man died in his home on Jellicoe Street in Flinders Park.

According to police, Berg, 35, was chased from the crime scene by another neighbour and was arrested a short time later.

He appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court today via video link from the James Nash House psychiatric facility where he entered the not guilty plea.

The magistrate indicated a mental incompetence defence would be pursued and the Supreme Court will assess Berg’s psychiatric state in greater detail.

His next court date is set for May 27.
