Snowtown serial killer asks judge to consider setting non-parole period
One of the Snowtown serial killers has launched his bid for freedom, telling the court he wants parole so he can do more rehabilitation and see his son.
Robert Joe Wagner is serving 10 life terms without parole for his involvement in the gruesome bodies-in-the-barrels murders.
Wagner was one of four men jailed over the worst case of serial killing in Australia's history. He represented himself in the Supreme court, as he asked the judge to consider setting a non-parole period.
The 48-year-old, who was convicted of 10 of the 11 so called ‘bodies in barrels murders’, says he wants to attend more rehabilitation programs and wants to see his son.

Wagner has been in custody since his son was 18 months old and wants the chance to spend time with him in the community.
He also told the court prison authorities are controlling who he sees in prison and stopping some of his mail.
Wagner was arrested in 1999 when police discovered the remains of eight bodies in plastic barrels at an old Snowtown bank.
Two more victims were dug up from a backyard in Salisbury North. The judge said the suitability of parole for the serial killer needs to be debated.
Wagner's case is set to return to court next week.
