Adelaide man suffers serious injuries after barbecue explodes

A 48-year-old man has suffered serious injuries after his barbecue exploded at his home in Adelaide's eastern suburbs this morning.

The man was cooking bacon and eggs when the accident occurred about 8am.

South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and paramedics rushed to the home on Cadna Avenue in Felixstow.

Flames from the barbecue left the victim with serious burns to his body.

"He's gone inside for a short window period and when he's come back he lifted the hood and the barbecue exploded," SA Ambulance Services' Dylan Milde told 9News.

"So professional paramedics treated the man on the scene for face, neck, chest and leg injuries."

The man was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He is recovering in the burns unit and is in a serious but stable condition.

The MFS says the gas bottle did not explode and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The incident is the latest in a spate of backyard barbecue accidents forcing paramedics to issue a public warning.

"The ambulance service has seen an increase in these incidents over the past few months," Mr Milde said.

Last Friday, a Dudley Park man suffered burns to his arm after petrol vapour caused a barbecue to explode.

Paramedics are urging people to take care.

"We ask the public to remain vigilant and stay safe around their barbecue," Mr Milde said.

It is advised to keep looking while cooking and never leave a flame unattended.

It is also advised to use soapy water to check for gas leaks and make sure equipment is in good condition.

And if you do sustain burns from a fire, immediately seek running water.

"And if the burn is severe or life threatening, call Triple Zero," Mr Milde said.
