A firefighter has collapsed after suffering a medical episode while trying to save an Adelaide home.

The firefighter was one of more than 20 crew responding to a house fire allegedly sparked by arson in Plympton Park just before 7am.

The firefighter's colleagues were shaken as they rushed to provide first aid before paramedics arrived.

The senior officer suffered a medical episode and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where he is recovering.

"Our thoughts are absolutely with his family. I know the individual very well, and absolutely my thoughts are with him and his family," Metropolitan Fire Service Chief Officer Jeff Swann said.

As firefighters battled the blaze, police were also on the scene and questioned a man who had run to a neighbouring property after the fire broke out. 

He was later released, before a 39-year-old was arrested and charged with arson.

He will likely remain in custody to appear in court on Monday.
